February 11, 2011
Time:Feb. 9-11, 2011, 2-3:15 p.m.
Description:Dr. Barbara Rogoff, distinguished professor of psychology (University of California Santa Cruz) will deliver a talk titled "Learning by Observing and Pitching In, Especially in Indigenous-Heritage Communities of the Americas." In some communities where children are included in a wide range of activities, they are keen observers and learn through contributing to the ongoing activities of their community. This lecture presents theory and research on this cultural tradition for learning, which has been labeled "learning through intent community participation." It appears to be especially common in communities where children are routinely included in a wide range of activities of the community, such as many indigenous communities of the United States, Mexico and Guatemala.
