February 18, 2011
Time:2:45-4 p.m.
Description:Faculty Seminar on British Studies presents Brian Levack, "Demonic Possession in Early Modern Britain." In the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a number of people in England and Scotland went into violent convulsions, experienced severe contortions of their bodies, exhibited preternatural strength, vomited pins and other foreign objects and spoke in languages previously unknown to them. This talk explores the possibility that demoniacs were either consciously or unconsciously following scripts that were encoded in their religious cultures.

Brian Levack, a founding member of British Studies, is the John E. Green regents professor in history and distinguished teaching professor. His most recent book is "Witch-Hunting in Scotland: Law, Politics, and Religion" (2008). He is completing a book on demonic possession in early modern Europe.
