February 23, 2011
Time:Noon-1:30 p.m.
Description:Sociologist Ben Carrington presents "Fear of a Black Athlete: White Sporting Mythologies in the Age of Obama," a discussion of how the lives, actions and representations of professional black athletes have increasingly become important cultural sites for ideas about race within contemporary American society. Carrington is associate professor of sociology at The University of Texas at Austin and widely regarded as one the world's leading scholars on the politics of sport, media and race.

Carrington analyzes racialized media discourses surrounding Michael Vick, Tiger Woods and LeBron James in the context of both the current presidency of Barack Obama and the long history of white fears and Western mythologies concerning black male sexuality. Carrington is co-editor of "'Race,' Sport and British Society" and "Marxism, Cultural Studies and Sport," and author of the recently published "Race, Sport and Politics: The Sporting Black Diaspora."
