| Time: | Noon-1:30 p.m. |
| Description: | Ambassador Ronald Neumann, president, American Academy of Diplomacy, presents "Smart Diplomacy for the 21st Century: People Are as Important as Concepts." Lunch provided. Neumann discusses the consequences of U.S. funding cutbacks in the area of diplomacy, which have led to increased reliance on the military for foreign political, social and economic tasks.
While this response has often been brilliant in the short run, there are obstacles to long-term progress and stability. Demands on the military have reduced forces available for purely military tasks, adding to the strains caused by two wars. Ambassador Neumann will address how to put the nation back on track toward effective diplomacy.
Neumann, a veteran, was ambassador to Algeria, Bahrain and Afghanistan. He was a member of the Senior Foreign Service, served in Baghdad with the Coalition Provisional Authority and then as Embassy Baghdad's principal interlocutor with Multinational Command. He is the author of "The Other War: Winning and Losing in Afghanistan." He served as an army officer in Vietnam and holds a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantry Badge. |
