| Time: | 4:30-9:30 p.m. |
| Description: | Celebrate Nowruz - the New Year - with an afternoon of music, regional food and fun. Performers include Ustad Nizami and family (4:30 p.m.), 1001 Nights Orchestra (6 p.m.) and Atash (8 p.m.). In keeping with the festivities, Central Market Cafe offers a Nowruz menu consisting of specialties from Persian, Uzbek, Kurdish, Armenian, Turkish, Arabic and other cultures celebrating Nowruz.
According to the Wikipedia entry for Nowruz, Nowruz is celebrated and observed by Iranian peoples and the related cultural continent, and has spread to many other parts of the world, including portions of Central Asia, South Asia, Northwestern China, the Crimea and the Balkans. Nowruz marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in Iranian calendar. It is celebrated on the day of the astronomical vernal equinox, which usually occurs on March 21 or the previous/following day, depending on where it is observed. As well as being a Zoroastrian holiday and having significance among the Zoroastrian ancestors of modern Iranians, the same time of year is also celebrated on the Indian subcontinent as the new year. |
