"Beyond Self-Cultivation: Egyptian Dreams and Subjectivities" is presented by Dr. Amira Mittermaier. Mittermaier examines how Egyptian dream-stories might complicate the paradigm of self-cultivation that has in recent years become hegemonic in the anthropology of Islam. Drawing on narratives of visitational and prophetic dreams, Mittermaier suggests that "self-cultivation" works well to describe certain practices central to the Islamic piety movement, but obscures other modes of religiosity. Yet these other modes pose an even more radical challenge to the liberal autonomous self.
