Anne Stanton, associate professor, Medieval and Northern Renaissance Art, University of Missouri, presents a talk titled "And Thereby Hangs a Tale: Visual Storytelling in Gothic Psalters."
This talk will focus on two 14th-century English psalters in which sequential imagery in initials and bottom margins frames the non-narrative Latin psalms within the narrative of Old Testament history. These narrative vignettes - often literally hanging on foliate extensions in initials or along the margins - focus on personal details from the lives of Old-Testament figures, and provided multiple historical and allegorical contexts within which the meanings of the psalms were to be internalized.
