| Description: | Multi-Grammy-winning Brazilian superstar and social activist Gilberto Gil returns to Texas Performing Arts with a program that pays homage to music pioneer and father of the baião, Luiz Gonzaga. An ArtesAméricas performance.
Baião fuses classic styles of European folk music with indigenous and African sounds. Acclaimed composer, accordionist and singer Luiz Gonzaga, known as the "King of Baião," was responsible for taking this music from rural Northeast Brazil to the rest of the country. Driven by the accordion, triangle and a bass drum, baião forms the soundtrack for the Catholic June Festival and the popular dance music known as forró. |
