November 15, 2012
Time:10-11:30 a.m.
Description:Mary Giovagnoli, director of the Immigration Policy Center at the American Immigration Council in Washington, D.C., delivers the School of Social Work Dean Jack Otis Social Problem and Social Policy Lecture, titled "Beyond Immigration: Why a Dysfunctional Immigration System Hurts All Americans; Why All Americans Must Contribute to a Solution."

In her presentation, Giovagnoli provides an overview of current immigration politics (including a postelection analysis of what's next for immigration) and discusses the role of the social sciences in shaping the debate. She will engage the audience in a discussion of how the work we do in our everyday lives translates into important data that can drive policy discussions and change the hearts and minds of Congress and other policymakers.

Prior to joining the Immigration Policy Center in 2009, Giovagnoli was the senior director of policy for the National Immigration Forum.

The late Dr. Jack Otis (1923-2010) established the Dean Jack Otis Social Problem and Social Policy Endowed Lecture series to inspire more academic attention to current social problems. Otis was a dean (1965-1977) and a professor (1978-1993) at the School of Social Work, The University of Texas at Austin.
