Dr. Tanya González (Kansas State University) and Dr. Eliza Rodríguez y Gibson (Loyola Marymount University) explore the ways in which the television show "Ugly Betty" moved the audience beyond patriarchal modes of familia toward affective kinship networks through an analysis of Justin's coming out narrative and the networks of support that are available to this young gay character.
González and Rodríguez y Gibson are collaborating on a book-length project titled "The Word on Ugly Betty: Latina/o Cultural Politics on Television."
