Description:Playwright, critic and novelist John Spurling discusses the life of his great-uncle, Sir Edmund Gibson, who joined the Indian Civil Service in 1910. Extracts from Sir Edmund's diaries and letters convey what it was like to be part of the "machine" that ran this part of Britain's vast imperial territory in the period leading toward its independence.
