| Description: | Attend a screening of "Bhopali," an award-winning documentary about the survivors of the Union Carbide industrial disaster that killed thousands in Bhopal, India. Director Van Maximilian "Max" Carlson will attend.
On the night of December 2, 1984, safety lapses caused 27 tonnes of a toxic gas to be released over the sleeping city of Bhopal, India, from a Union Carbide (now Dow Chemicals) factory. Eight thousand died overnight. Today, the estimated death toll stands at about 20,000. Still, there have been no efforts to clean the site of toxic waste. The compensation to victims is grossly inadequate and the perpetrators of the disaster have yet to be brought to trial. |
