Description:"Killing Them Loudly: Rhetorics of Sonic Torture" is a talk by Joshua Gunn, examining the practice of torturing detainees with music and the ways it is talked about.

Gunn's research focuses on the rhetorical nature of the ineffable, or that which can't be expressed. In this presentation, he suggests that arguments surrounding "sonic torture" reveal more about the torturers than the victims. Gunn is the author of "Modern Occult Rhetoric: Mass Media and the Drama of Secrecy in the Twentieth Century" and his scholarly subjects range from music and film to religion and celebrity culture. He is associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies.
