Description:
South Asia seminar features Bangladeshi filmmaker
Bangladeshi filmmaker Rubaiyat Hossain, director of the film "Meherjaan," gives a talk titled "Meherjaan, Aesthetic Solution to Violence: Challenging Patriarchal Nationalism."

"Meherjaan" was created with a conscious effort to bring out a narrative of love to overcome man-made political boundaries. The story of a Bangladeshi girl falling in love with a deserter Pakistani soldier, set against the backdrop of Bangladesh's war of independence, was made for a mass audience and released in mainstream cinemas in six districts of Bangladesh, causing an uproar among left-wing, liberal, cultural activists as well as among the current ruling bloc, which banned the film.
