Description:Focusing on one landmark catastrophic event in the history of an emerging modern nation - the Great Kanto Earthquake that devastated Japan's imperial capital in 1923 - art historian Gennifer Weisenfeld explores how different media produce modes of seeing, understanding and, eventually, remembering.

Weisenfeld's pioneer work on early-20th-century avant-garde and commercial art includes her book "Mavo: Japanese Artists and the Avant-Garde, 1905-1931." She is currently an associate professor and director of graduate studies in art and art history at Duke University.
