Journalist Jacinto Rodríguez Mungía presents "El papel de los intelectuales en la transición a la democracia en México" (The Role of Intellectuals in the Transition to Democracy in Mexico), examining the period following political domination by the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), which governed Mexico for more than 70 years.
Rodríguez's research is partly based on the discovery of files left behind by PRI officials in the 1970s. His findings helped to reveal critical relations of power between the PRI and other institutions that had been originally denied by the Mexican intellectual elite.
A practicing journalist who has gained a national reputation for his writing on Mexican politics and the press, Rodríguez currently works as coordinator of the program Prensa y Democracia at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City.
