| Description: | This meeting focuses on the violent Gods and deities in Hinduism whose sole purpose was to destroy evil, one prime example being Kali. The topic of Kali sacrifices in the present day will be discussed.
In Calcutta, a haven for Kali worshipers, people still perform animal sacrifices to this day near Kali temples, and intermittent news stories even talk of human sacrifice happening secretly for these purposes. At this meeting, we explore the history of such sacrifices through texts and news articles, while asking about the validity of such rituals. Kali's purpose was to destroy evil, but in a world where good and evil are gray areas, how do we judge the spiritual nature of such sacrifices and how does this affect the ahimsa angle in Hinduism? |
