May 3, 2012
Time:3:30-5 p.m.
Description:Professor of Sociology Jammie Price gives a talk titled "The Poker Club: Gendered Power in Higher Education." Price was suspended by her employer, Appalachian State University, after four students reported discomfort with a documentary on sexism in the pornography industry and a lecture on institutionalized racism in sports.

Price discusses why she believes the disciplinary action is a violation of her academic freedom and retribution for her willingness to raise critical issues in class. A tenured full professor with more than 20 years of teaching experience, Price learned she would not receive a due-process hearing and she was instructed not to communicate with any students, staff or faculty.
The American Association of University Professors has issued a letter of sanction against the Appalachian State.
