In conjunction with photographer Liz Hingley's exhibition "Under Gods," on view at the Visual Arts Center (VAC), the Spiritual Object Studio project invites the public to be photographed with an object of personal spiritual meaning. Capacity limited to 15 participants; contact Xochi Solis at email@example.com by Sept. 26 to reserve your spot.
Hingley's work always centers around a community and explores links among different forms of belief and the material expression of religion in urban spaces.
For the Spiritual Object Studio, Hingley will photograph each participant with his or her object in a studio constructed within the VAC and then ask that a caption explaining the spiritual meaning of the object be added to the portrait.
As the exhibition travels and the event reoccurs in other venues in the U.S., Japan and Scotland, these texts and portraits will grow in number and scope. All contributions will eventually be made into a visual reference book of the scanned captions and portraits.
