Description:The Energy Institute hosts a second information session for faculty interested in responding to a new request for proposals (RFP) from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI). Funding is available for projects related to the April 2010 BP Deep Water Horizon explosion and oil spill.

Total funds available are $7.5 million per year for up to three years. Schedule for submissions is as follows: letter of intent due by Jan. 17, 2012; full proposal due Mar. 8; awards announced on June 30.

Research themes for the RFP include:

- Physical distribution, dispersion and dilution of petroleum, its constituents and associated contaminants under the action of physical oceanographic processes, air-sea interactions and tropical storms.

- Chemical evolution and biological degradation of the petroleum/dispersant systems and subsequent interaction with coastal, open-ocean and deep-water ecosystems.

- Environmental effects of the petroleum/dispersant system on the sea floor, water column, coastal waters, beach sediments, wetlands, marshes and organisms; and the science of ecosystem recovery.

- Technology developments for improved response, mitigation, detection, characterization and remediation associated with oil spills and gas releases.
