January 30, 2012
Time:11 a.m.-2 p.m.
Description:On the 64th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, the Association for India's Development-Austin (AID) joins groups across India and the United States, in speaking out against violations of human rights and civil liberties in India.

Visit the West Mall to learn more, share your thoughts and to join AID Austin in taking a stand against rule by fear and violence.

In 2011, the world's largest democracy intensified its brutal assault on the human rights and civil liberties of its people.

In Chhattisgarh, two outspoken critics of violence by police and extra-judicial militias have been arrested, detained without trial for the last four months and tortured in custody.

In Manipur, a frail yet profoundly strong woman has been fasting for the last eleven years, in protest against martial law.

These stories are just the beginning.

Across India, activists seeking to expose corruption, poor governance and human rights violations are harassed and intimidated daily. Since 2010, at least 12 such individuals have been murdered. Detention without trial and custodial violence are routine; in the last decade, an average of four people have died in police custody every day, many of them still under trial.
