DESCRIPTION:The Texas Enterprise Speaker Series presents a lunchtime talk by Dr. Jerry Brand\, who discusses the promise of the developing algal biofuel industry and how it could shape our energy future.\n\n\n\nOil is big business\, but the industry will see a massive shift over the next century to alternative fuels\, as petroleum supplies dwindle and become too expensive. Wind and solar hold promise for our electricity needs\, but what will power our cars\, planes and boats?\n\n\n\nBrand sees one answer in the diverse world of algae. The science is advancing rapidly\, and biofuel production can ramp up to scale with sufficient investments made toward the remaining obstacles and developing technology. All over the world - even in the oceans - algae can be grown simply\, densely and efficiently.\n\n\n\nBrand is the Jack S. Josey professor in Energy Studies and professor of biology in the College of Natural Sciences. He is the director of The University of Texas at Austin's UTEX Culture Collection of Algae\, one of the most extensive and diverse collections of living algae in the world.

DESCRIPTION:"Process Mapping: How to Streamline and Re-engineer Business Processes" offers a simple yet powerful method to look beyond functional activities and to rediscover your core processes. \n\n\n\nOnce you peel away the complexity of your organizational structure (and internal politics)\, you can focus on the processes that comprise the heart of your business. When used properly\, process maps can reduce operating costs significantly by eliminating as much as 50 percent of the steps and the root causes of systemic quality problems.

DESCRIPTION:Professor Violina Rindova presents findings from a theory-building study of Alessi\, the Italian manufacturer of household goods. \n\n\n\nAlessi's products are designed by approximately 200 famous architects and industrial designers from around the world\, including Philippe Starck\, Michael Graves\, Frank Gehry\, Richard Sapper and Ettore Sottsass. According to the company\, more than 600 of its products are a part of the permanent collections of design and modern art museums around the world. Alessi is an unusual case that enables the development of new theory about new and rare phenomena by providing a setting where the phenomenon of interest can be observed. Rindova's analysis shows that Alessi engaged in a complex learning process using concepts from four distinct fields to transform the way it thought about its products and customers.
