DESCRIPTION:Attend a teach-in focusing on the impact of the POSCO steel project on local communities in the state of Orissa\, India. \n\n\n\nIn 2005\, the government of the Indian state of Orissa signed a deal to allow the Korean steel giant\, POSCO\, to set up a 12-billion-dollar steel project in the state. The scale and impact of the POSCO project have been unprecedented. Despite conclusions by government-instituted committees that the clearances granted to POSCO are in violation of Indian environmental law and Forest Rights legislation\, neither the company nor the Indian government has paid any attention. Yet the villagers of Jagatsinghpur have been opposing the project fiercely and with every democratic means at their disposal\, for the last six years.

DESCRIPTION:In his talk "Scandal and Silence: Media Responses to Presidential Misconduct\," Professor Robert Entman of George Washington University challenges the conventional wisdom on media and scandal in the United States.\n\n\n\nThe common view holds that media crave and actively pursue scandals whenever they sense corruption. Entman argues for a different perspective. His research shows that (1) media neglect most corruption\, providing too little\, not too much scandal coverage\; (2) scandals arise from rational\, controlled processes\, not emotional frenzies\; (3) significant scandals are difficult for news organizations to initiate and harder for them to maintain and bring to appropriate closure\; (4) for these reasons cover-ups and lying often work\, and truth remains essentially unrecorded\, unremembered.\n\n \n\nEntman will illustrate his discussion with examples of scandals - and nonscandals - involving Bill Clinton\, George W. Bush and others.\n\n\n\nEntman is J.B. and M.C. Shapiro professor of media and public affairs and professor of international affairs at George Washington University.

Howard looks at policy planning discourses from each country\, then asks\, with particular reference to Bolivia: if changes in official discourse reflect genuine shifts in the "paradigms of diversity\," and what the language of the legal instruments can tell us about identity struggle at every societal level.

Progress and investment in these neighborhoods represented a necessary change from decades of segregation and abandonment. However\, local tax codes\, large commercial developments and an influx of wealthier residents threaten to tear at the fabric of these communities and displace families who have lived there for generations. In Austin\, community members and advocates fear that the development of the East Side Corridor constitutes such a threat.

Learn about the LGBTQ community\, the issues its members face and how you can be of support. Become the A(lly) in LGBTQA.\n\n\n\nOne of the lesser-known facts about Barbara Jordan is that she had a woman partner. Highlighting this aspect of her life through an ally training not only raises awareness about a purposely hidden aspect of Jordan's life\, but does so in a way that shows support for the LGBTQ community. As a main pillar of Jordan's life was to fight for minority populations\, we strive to honor her work as an advocate by training more advocates.

DESCRIPTION:Author and activist Rachel Lloyd discusses her new book\, "Girls Like Us\," a deeply moving story by a survivor of the commercial sex industry who has devoted her career to activism and helping other young girls escape "the life." \n\n\n\nAt 13\, Lloyd found herself caught up in a world of pain and abuse\, struggling to survive as a child with no responsible adults to support her. Vulnerable yet tough\, she eventually ended up a victim of commercial sexual exploitation. It took time and incredible resilience\, but with the help of a local church community\, she broke free of her pimp and her past. Three years later\, Lloyd arrived in the United States to work with adult women in the sex industry and soon founded her own nonprofit - GEMS\, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services - to meet the needs of other girls with her history. She also earned her GED and won full scholarships to college and a graduate program. \n\n\n\nLloyd is executive director of GEMS in New York City and has turned it into one of the nation's most groundbreaking nonprofit organizations. In "Girls Like Us\," Lloyd reveals the dark\, secretive world of her past in stunning cinematic detail.

The "solutions" scapegoat teachers\, vilify our unions and promise more private control and market mentality as the answer. In each case\, students lose - especially students of color and the children of the working class and the poor.\n\n\n\n"Education and Capitalism" (Haymarket Books\, 2012) speaks back to that elite consensus\, informed by a revolutionary vision of pedagogy\, schools and education\, and paints a radical critique of education in corporate America\, past and present\, and contributes to a vision of alternatives for education and liberation.\n\n\n\nSpecial thanks to Haymarket Books and the UT Center for Asian American Studies.

Suri examines American prosperity in the years following World War II\, arguing that citizens can bring about a resurgence of American greatness.\n\n\n\nAfter the Second World War\, American society benefited from unprecedented peace and prosperity. What was key to this success? Americans were very strategic in their deployment of historical wisdom\, drawing upon the experiences\, institutions and knowledge acquired in earlier decades to build our nation.\n\n\n\nSo far\, Americans have not shown the same wisdom in the 21st century\, and our society is suffering. The time has come for Americans to reawaken their historical wisdom\, analyzing the recent past to identify the key ideas and institutions that will allow our society to thrive once more.

Armony is professor of sociology and director of the Observatory of the Americas at the University of Quebec at Montreal. \n\n\n\nArmony discusses the attitudes toward multiculturalism in Quebec\, whose quasi-state status has made it a sort of nation within the nation. Supported by a majority of the French Quebecois people\, Quebec's government imposes restrictions on the choice of language of business and education\, openly rejects multiculturalism and enforces different selection and integration criteria for immigrants based on the province's particular interests rather than Canada's. Armony argues that by taking into account the larger historical\, sociopolitical and demographic context\, it can be argued that Quebec's seemingly anti-Democratic actions actually reflect the core of democratic sovereignty - its foundations and its inherent contradictions.

DESCRIPTION:Victor Armony\, the 2012 Canada-U.S. Fulbright visiting chair in Policy Studies\, presents "What Is Your Color or Race?" - a talk on ways in which several countries in Latin America seek to identify the ethnic "Other" through a very particular institutional process: the construction of census categories.\n\n\n\nTo what extent does naming the "Other" in official discourse become a controversial political and legal issue? The basic challenges faced by public institutions in recognizing and accommodating the identities of minority (or subaltern majority) groups are now common to most countries in the Americas. Cultural and ethnic diversity has become an important aspect of policymaking and public debate over complex issues such as immigration and naturalization reform\, the application of antidiscrimination norms\, affirmative action\, curriculum guidelines for education\, language use and bilingualism\, religious freedom and secularism. All require facing the question of "Who are we and who are they?"
