March 21, 2012
Time:10-11:30 a.m.
Description:The 2012 Dean Jack Otis Social Problem and Social Policy Lecture presents a talk by Jonah Edelman, CEO of Stand for Children, titled "Closing the Achievement Gap: What Really Works and What Caring Adults Can Do to Help." Reception follows in school foyer. CEUs available. Contact Liz Nowicki.

Edelman is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Stand for Children, a growing and influential voice for students. He hails from a family of civil rights leaders-his mother, Marian Wright Edelman, was the first African American woman admitted to the Mississippi bar and his father, Peter Edelman, was a close aide to Robert F. Kennedy.

Edelman was recognized on Time.com as one of the nation's top education activists in 2011. Since helping to organize Stand for Children Day in 1996, Stand for Children's founding rally in Washington, D.C., the national organization has grown steadily and now includes a Texas state affiliate with offices in Austin and Houston.

A panel of community respondents will be moderated by Kathy Armenta, LCSW, a member of the School of Social Work clinical faculty and a former school social worker.
