| Description: | Victor Armony, the 2012 Canada-U.S. Fulbright visiting chair in Policy Studies, presents a talk titled "Quebec Nationalism, Canadian Multiculturalism and Democratic Legitimacy." Armony is professor of sociology and director of the Observatory of the Americas at the University of Quebec at Montreal.
Armony discusses the attitudes toward multiculturalism in Quebec, whose quasi-state status has made it a sort of nation within the nation. Supported by a majority of the French Quebecois people, Quebec's government imposes restrictions on the choice of language of business and education, openly rejects multiculturalism and enforces different selection and integration criteria for immigrants based on the province's particular interests rather than Canada's. Armony argues that by taking into account the larger historical, sociopolitical and demographic context, it can be argued that Quebec's seemingly anti-Democratic actions actually reflect the core of democratic sovereignty - its foundations and its inherent contradictions. |
