\nAmong her unhappily married fictional peers - such as Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina - Dorothea Brooke of "Middlemarch" stands out as a heroine who not only survives the end of the novel, but gets to enjoy a happy second marriage. Rather than discussing the novel's denouement in terms of the "Woman Question," this talk will focus on the national dimensions of the love triangle by examining it against the political backdrop of the British Reform Bills and the Polish Insurrections of the 1830s and the 1860s.\nAdmission: Free and open to the public
