Two years ago a catastrophic earthquake ravaged Haiti. Professors from the Cockrell School were among a team of engineers and scientists that evaluated Port-au-Prince’s infrastructure for safety.

I am surprised that the safety procedures being advertised for the coming "Earthquake day" exercises does not reflect the findings of the studies made after the Haiti quake. They are still advocating the "Drop, Cover, Hold on" steps, which are fine for a tornado, while the Haiti studies showed that laying in the aisle between desks was the safest place to be when the ceiling came down and crushed the desks during an earthquake.
