    Going organic?

    By Christopher Palmer
    Published: March 19, 2012

Lydia Steinman, senior lecturer in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, talks about the meditative joy of gardening and busts some myths about the difference between organic and conventional gardening.

As an advocate for children’s heath, Steinman works to promote the adoption of policies that improve the nutritional environment of public schools in Texas.

Steinman has worked with the University of Texas Elementary School in establishing the Healthy Families Initiative, a comprehensive coordinated health program. The cornerstone of this program is a sustainable student-tended vegetable garden that is used to educate children about nutrition, encourage vegetable consumption and increase daily physical activity.
