Mr. Newton retired in December 2000 from the position of Vice Chairman of American General Corporation of Houston. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Texas in 1963 and a law degree from The University of Texas School of Law in 1965. He served as President of the UT Ex-Students' Association in 1992 and received an award for Distinguished Service from the State Bar of Texas in 1975 and the Outstanding Young Texas-Ex Award from The University of Texas in 1980. In 2001, Mr. Newton was named a Distinguished Alumnus of The University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Newton served three terms in the Texas House of Representatives and was elected as a Railroad Commissioner in 1976. He was appointed to The University of Texas System Board of Regents in 1979, serving as Chairman from 1983-1985.
