
On March 6, 2007, UT Law’s Immigration Clinic, directed by Rapoport Center Steering Committee member Barbara Hines, together with the ACLU and an international law firm, filed lawsuits in federal court on behalf of 10 immigrant children held at the T. Don Hutto facility in Taylor, Texas. Since the filing of the lawsuit, six of the children — Kevin Yourdkhani, Richard Carbajal, Angelina Carbajal, Aisha Ibrahim, Mohammed Ibrahim and Bahja Ibrahim — have been released from Hutto with their families. On February 25, 2007, Judith Rhedin, assistant director of the Performing Arts Center in the College of Fine Arts and member of the Rapoport Center Steering Committee, received the W. Charles Akins Award. The award is presented each year to an individual or an organization that has "exemplified strong character, excellent leadership and outstanding service in the area of education in the Austin Independent School District and the community."
