Clinical Education at UT Law — Real Cases. Real Experience.

Mediation Clinic

Overview

Students mediate disputes between real people. Students interview the disputants, make arrangements for the mediation, and prepare for and conduct mediations. In addition, the students observe mediations by professional mediators. Students may also serve as mediators for litigation advocacy classes and for mediation competitions. Most of the cases handled are referred for mediation from small-claims courts. In addition, the Clinic may accept cases from other courts and nonprofit entities. A flexible schedule is essential because mediations occur outside class hours. Weekly class meetings examine the mediation process in depth, comparing facilitative, evaluative, and transformative approaches to mediation.
