Faculty
At the heart of the Law School's program in intellectual property law is its diverse and talented faculty. The University of Texas has several full-time faculty members who concentrate on intellectual property law or related areas. This strong faculty is supplemented each year by a number of experienced practitioners from around the state, as well as by faculty members from other departments who teach in related areas and by visitors from other law schools in the United States and abroad.

Lynn Baker is the Thomas Watt Gregory Professor of Law. She specializes in trademark and unfair competition law. She received her B.A. from Oxford University and a BA and J.D. from Yale University. Before joining the faculty, she taught at the University of Virginia and the University of Arizona. She has written in the area of trademark theory and unfair competition. She teaches Trademarks and Unfair Competition, Property, State and Local Government Law, and Professional Responsibility.
R. Anthony Reese is an Assistant Professor of Law who specializes in copyright, trademark, and Internet law. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his J.D. from Stanford Law School. Before joining the faculty, he practiced law in San Francisco for several years, and taught at Stanford Law School. He has published several articles on copyright law and intellectual property on the Internet. He teaches Introduction to Intellectual Property, Copyright, Intellectual Property in Cyberspace, and Intellectual Property Theory.
David Sokolow is a Senior Lecturer in Law who specializes in entertainment law. He received his B.A., M.A. and J.D. from Columbia University and his M.B.A. from the University of Texas. Before joining the faculty, he practiced entertainment law in New York at the law firm of Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison. He teaches Entertainment Law and the Entertainment Law Seminar, as well as Contracts and Business Associations.
Wayne Schiess is a Senior Lecturer in Law who specializes in legal writing. He received his B.A. from Brigham Young University and his J.D. from Cornell University. He joined the faculty after three years of law practice in the Dallas office of Baker Botts, LLP. He gives seminars on legal writing and provides legal-writing expertise as a consultant. Among other courses, he teaches Intellectual Property Drafting.
Lawrence Tobe Liebert is a Lecturer in Law and the Director of Public Services at the Tarlton Law Library at the Law School. He received his B.A. from Center College, his J.D. from the University of Kentucky, and his M.L.S. from Indiana University-Bloomington. He teaches a course on Advanced Legal Research: Intellectual Property.

Percy is a Lecturer in Law and the Head of Media and Reserve
Services for the Tarlton Law Library at the School of Law. Mr. Percy received
both his B.S. and J.D. with honors from Tulane University, and his M.L.I.S.
at San Jose State University. He teaches a course on Advanced Legal Research:
Intellectual Property.
Carl Baudenbacher is a regular visiting professor. He is a Justice of the European Free Trade Association Court of Justice, and Professor and Director of the program in Business Law at the Universitat St. Gallen, Switzerland. He teaches International Intellectual Property, European Community Law, and European Competition Law.
James B. Gambrell is a Visiting Professor. He received his B.S. from The University of Texas, his M.A. from Columbia University, and his LL.B. from New York University. He comes to the University of Texas School of Law from the law firm of Akin, Gump in Austin, where he is a partner. He was a Professor of Law at the University of Houston Law Center (1976-82) and the New York University School of Law (1966-76), where he taught courses in patents, trademarks, copyrights and intellectual property among others. He is the founding co-author of the six-volume Patent Law Perspectives, co-author of On Opportunities and Pitfalls in Trademark Litigation, and author of numerous articles on intellectual property subjects. He teaches Introduction to Intellectual Property, Patent Law, Trademarks and Unfair Competition, and Intellectual Property and Antitrust Constraints.
Steven Salbu is the Bobbie and Coulter R. Sublett Centennial Professor and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the McCombs School of Business of The University of Texas at Austin and serves as Director of the University of Texas Business Ethics Program and of the EMBA Program in Mexico City. He received his B.A. from Hofstra University, an M.A. from Dartmouth College, his J.D. from the College of William and Mary, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He has published articles in numerous law journals and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the American Business Law Journal. At the law school, he teaches Cyberlaw.
Steven Nichols is Associate Professor in, and Associate Chair of, the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering. He received his B.S., M.S., Ph.D., and J.D. degrees from The University of Texas. In addition to his academic career, he has worked as a consultant for private industry and for NASA. Dr. Nichols has particular interest in engineering design education both at the undergraduate and the graduate level and in professional ethics. He teaches The Enterprise of Technology: From Lab to Market, an interdisciplinary course drawing students from the Schools of Law, Engineering, Natural Sciences, and Business.
William G. Barber is a shareholder with the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski in Austin. He received his B.S. and J.D. from The University of Texas. He team-teaches a course on Trademarks with Louis Pirkey.
Edward A. Cavazos is a principal in the firm of Fish & Richardson in Austin. He received his B.A. and J.D. from The University of Texas. He teaches a course on Software Licensing.
Peter D. Kennedy is an attorney with the
law firm of George & Donaldson in Austin.
He received his B.A. from Southwestern University and his J.D. from the
University of Chicago. He teaches a seminar on Free Speech and the Internet.
David Parker is an attorney at the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski in Austin, Texas, where he practices patent law. He received his B.A. from The University of Texas, his Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, and his J.D. from The University of Texas. He teaches the Patent Prosecution Workshop.
Daniel Perez is a partner at the law firm of Bickel & Brewer in Dallas, Texas, where he practices intellectual property law. He received his B.S. from Texas Tech University and his J.D. from The University of Texas. He teaches Enforcement of Intellectual Property.
Henry A. Petri, Jr. is a shareholder with the law firm of Howrey, Simon & White in Houston, Texas. He received his B.S.C.E. from Rice and his J.D. from The University of Texas. He teaches Patent Litigation.
Louis Pirkey is an attorney at the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski in Austin, Texas, where he practices trademark law. The National Law Journal has named him one of the 100 most influential attorneys in the U.S. He received his B.S. from The University of Texas and his J.D. from George Washington University. He teaches Trademarks.
Robert Turner is a partner at the law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue in Dallas, Texas, where he practices intellectual property law. He received his B.A. from Rice University and his L.L.B. from The University of Texas. He teaches Enforcement of Intellectual Property.
