The School of Law at The University of Texas at Austin announces the
Louis T. Pirkey Prize in Intellectual Property Law, awarded for the
outstanding paper on a topic in intellectual property. Made possible by
an endowment from the Austin Intellectual Property Law Association
(Austin IPLA), the Prize honors Louis T. Pirkey, founder of Austin IPLA,
past-president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and
a longtime adjunct professor at the Law School.
Student and Paper Eligibility
- All current students at the School of Law during the
2005–2006 academic year, other than first-year students, shall
be eligible, including LL.M. and exchange students.
- A student may submit only one paper for consideration.
- The paper must primarily treat some topic in any area of intellectual
property law.
- Papers must be prepared during the 2005–2006 academic year and
must not have been published before the submission deadline of
June 16, 2006.
- Papers must be solely the original, individual effort of the author.
Collaboration with others, beyond ordinary law journal supervision or
faculty comments and guidance, is not permitted.
Submission Requirements
- Three complete copies of each paper must be submitted.
- Papers must be mechanically printed or typewritten on 8½" by
11" paper, must be double-spaced, and must have margins of at least
1" on all sides.
- Electronic copies will not be accepted.
- Papers must be no longer than 60 pages.
- Copies submitted for consideration will not be returned.
- The title page must include the paper's title; the date of completion
of the paper; and the author's name, year of expected graduation,
address, phone number, and e-mail address.
- Papers must be received no later than June 16,
2006.
- Papers may be submitted in person to Linda Alba, Rm. 2.122, or by
mail to Louis T. Pirkey Prize Competition, Financial Aid Office,
School of Law, The University of Texas at Austin, 727 E. Dean Keeton
Street, Austin, TX 78705.
- Late submissions will not be accepted, and submissions not meeting
the requirements listed above will not be considered. Receipt of
submissions will not be acknowledged.
Judging and Prize
- The prize, an award of $350, will be awarded at the Austin IPLA
annual dinner in October 2006.
- Winners will be determined at the sole discretion of the Dean, who
may delegate the selection of the winning paper to one or more
faculty members.
- Criteria for judging papers shall include originality of thought,
contributions to the law and practice, completeness of scholarly
research, and the overall style and content of the work.
- All entrants will be notified of the results in writing.
