Another National Championship

The University of Texas walked away with the National Championship of the first American Bar Association National Arbitration Competition held November 18th-20th. UT team members Andrew Cook ('06), Portia Bettis Culver ('06), Casey Kaplan ('07), and Sarah Munson ('07) beat Stetson University in the championship round. The team was coached by UT adjunct professors John Fleming and Michael Golden ('01). Fleming is an Austin attorney and arbitrator and Golden is an associate with Vinson & Elkins.

The competition was hosted by William Mitchell School of Law in St. Paul Minnesota and sponsored by the American Bar Association and the National Arbitration Forum. Twenty teams from across the nation participated in the inaugural competition which was developed to provide law students with realistic arbitration hearing experience. During this competition, the students represented their client in an arbitration stemming from a commercial dispute between two businesses. The teams' preparation and presentation of their cases included opening statements, witness examinations, exhibit introductions evidentiary presentations and summations.
