John is a Shareholder/Director in Oppenheimer, Blend, Harrison & Tate, Inc. with over 36 years of practice experience. His practice is devoted to insolvency, business reorganizations, and related areas, including litigation in the bankruptcy court. John works with other firm attorneys to analyze the possible issues or impact of federal bankruptcy law on corporate and financial transactions, and assists in preparation of asset preservation strategies for firm clients.
 
John is a 1972 graduate of The University of Texas School of Law. He received a B.S. in Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point.  He is a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army for six years, including two years with The Berlin Brigade and thirteen months of combat service with The Fifth Mechanized Infantry Brigade (attached to the 3rd Marine Division) and other units in the Republic of Vietnam from July 1968—August 1969. While in the Army, John was Ranger and Airborne Qualified, and was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Vietnamese Decorations.

John’s professional affiliations included the American Bankruptcy Institute, College of the State Bar of Texas, Commercial Law League of America, San Antonio Bar Foundation and the State Bar of Texas foundation. He was an adjunct professor of law from 1978-1979 at St. Mary’s University School of Law. He is admitted to the State Bar of Texas; U.S. Supreme Court; U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit; U.S. District Courts, Western and Southern Districts of Texas. John has been designated one of the "Best Lawyers in America" every year since 1983, and as a "Texas Super Lawyer" every year since 2003.  

In San Antonio, John has served on the Boards of various civic and social organizations, including the Rotary Club of San Antonio, as a Director and Vice President; the Board of the Charity Ball Association; Board of Governors of The Argyle; and as Board member and Treasurer at the San Antonio Country Club. John served as Mayor Pro Tem and the City Council of Olmos Park, Texas for thirteen years. John has been married to his wife, Toby, for 44 years, and has two daughters, two sons-in-law, one son (and daughter-in-law to be), four granddaughters, and one grandson. He is an avid UT sports fan, hunter, fisherman, golfer, and Spurs season-ticket holder since their arrival in San Antonio.
