    Skadden Fellowship - Appl. Deadline

The Skadden Fellowship Program, described as "a legal Peace Corps" by The Los Angeles Times, was established in 1988 to commemorate the firm's 40th anniversary, in recognition of the dire need for greater funding for graduating law students who wish to devote their professional lives to providing legal services to the poor (including the working poor), the elderly, the homeless and the disabled, as well as those deprived of their civil or human rights. The aim of the foundation is to give Fellows the freedom to pursue public interest work; thus, the Fellows create their own projects at public interest organizations with at least two lawyers on staff before they apply.

Fellowships are awarded for two years. Skadden provides each Fellow with a salary and pays all fringe benefits to which an employee of the sponsoring organization would be entitled. For those Fellows not covered by a law school low-income protection plan, the firm will pay a Fellow's law school debt service for the tuition part of the loan for the duration of the fellowship. The 2012 class of Fellows brings to 648 the number of academically outstanding law school graduates and judicial clerks the firm has funded to work full-time for legal and advocacy organizations.

Grants will be made to sponsoring organizations only. Therefore, before the final application date of October 1, a public interest organization that will sponsor the applicant must be identified. The sponsor must be a 501(c)3 organization which provides civil legal services to the poor, including the working poor, the elderly, the disabled or those deprived of their civil or human rights.

Applications must be received by October 1, 2012. Fellows will be notified by December 7, 2012.

movie screening: "No Way Out But One"

Come join the UT Law School Domestic Violence Clinic and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid in screening “No Way Out But One” followed by a discussion.

“In 1994, Holly Collins felt she had run out of legal options and there was simply no other way to keep her children safe. So she kidnapped her own kids and went on the run. Hunted by the FBI, she and the children lived in the shadows with the help of a loosely organized ‘underground’ that helped victims of domestic violence and abuse find safety. Holly ultimately found safety in the Netherlands. There she became the first American to be granted asylum by the Dutch government as a result of domestic violence.”

After the movie, we’ll talk about the many issues it raises - ethical lawyering, international parental kidnapping, the intersection between domestic violence and child abuse, and the treatment of domestic violence by the courts.

Bring your friends! Snacks and drinks will be provided!!

Immigration Policy and the Criminal Syst

Are undocumented immigrants in the U.S. subjected to a lower standard of justice? As federal immigration offenses multiply to unprecedented levels, courts are forced to cope with bloated dockets by shuffling in as many as fifty defendants at a time to offer pleas. Due process concerns abound, and while the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals cracked down on en masse pleadings in 2009, significant obstacles remain in the realm of right to counsel. Moreover, border enforcement policies like Operation Streamline eliminate prosecutorial discretion for immigration crimes, sending thousands of non-violent offenders to federal prisons. A panel discussion sponsored by the Human Rights Law Society will discuss the rising immigrant incarceration trend from a human rights perspective. The panel will include: David Peterson, Assistant Federal Public Defender in Austin; Krystal Gómez, Advocacy and Policy Counsel at ACLU of Texas; and Graham Robertson, co-author of a recent Grassroots Leadership report on immigrant incarceration issues.

Fried Frank Fellowship - Appl. Deadline

For more information about this fellowship, please contact Nicole Simmons, Director of Public Service Programs in the CSO, at nsimmons@law.utexas.edu.

Fried Frank has created unique programs that effectively bridge the worlds of private law firm litigation and public service law by joining with two of the country's leading civil rights advocacy organizations, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF).

The LDF and MALDEF fellowships each give an entry-level lawyer the opportunity to spend two years as a Fried Frank litigator and then two years as a staff attorney with LDF or MALDEF. At the end of their four-year commitment, successful Fellows are encouraged to interview to return to Fried Frank and, in some cases, they may continue on the staff of their civil rights organization. We are proud that a number of our former Fellows hold high-level positions on the staffs of both LDF and MALDEF.

The ideal candidate for a Fried Frank Fellowship is a third-year law student or recent graduate currently in a judicial clerkship. Candidates for the MALDEF and LDF fellowships should have a genuine interest in both corporate and civil rights litigation. For the MALDEF Fellowship, Spanish language skills are highly desirable.

The application deadline is November 1, 2012 by 4:00 p.m. (Central).on the application and selection process can be found on the Fried Frank Fellowship page.
