    Townes Hall Morning Coffee

    On Monday, January 26th, Jones Day and the Texas Law Alumni Association is pleased to announce that it will kick off its Spring 2015 Townes Hall Morning Coffee for all students every Monday morning. Please bring your favorite travel mug from home (we are “going green,” so no paper products will be provided) and enjoy FREE coffee every Monday morning to start off your week on behalf of Jones Day and the Alumni Association. Coffee will be located at one, large station located near the 1L Classrooms (by TNH 2.140, TNH 2.139, etc.) beginning at 8:45 am.

    Summer Clerkships: What to Know

    This is the first of a three-part series about succeeding in your summer clerkship.

    Niki Moore of 3L+ Law Prep, together with Brandt Leibe, Partner King & Spalding (Houston and DC); Angela Olivarez, Partner, Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP (Houston); and Emily Harbison, Associate, Baker & McKenzie (Houston), will discuss how to excel in your summer clerkship. Learn about professionalism; and how to exceed employer expectations, seek work and manage assignments, balance priorities and deadlines in a professional manner, build successful relationships, and identify opportunities and avoid pitfalls in social events.

    Lives in the Law with Dale Ho

    Due to inclement weather, Lives in the Law with Dale Ho will take place on Thursday, March 5, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in the Eidman Courtroom.

    Dale Ho, director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, will speak at 11:45 a.m. in the Eidman Courtroom about voter suppression at the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. From 12:45-1:45 p.m., he’ll meet informally with students in the Jury Room to discuss his career path and answer questions.

    Ho supervises the ACLU's voting rights litigation nationwide. He has litigated cases under the federal Voting Rights Act and the National Voter Registration Act, including Shelby County v. Holder, and is a frequent television commentator on voting rights issues. Prior to joining the ACLU, he was Assistant Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

    Individual Meetings with Dale Ho on March 5 - 20-minute slots available from 2:15-3:35 p.m. in the Career Services Interview Suite Interested students can meet directly with Dale Ho, director of the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, following his Lives in the Law presentation.

    Judicial Clerkship Workshop

    On Friday, March 6, five judges from around the country will be at Texas Law to speak with students about clerkships and the application process. Every student who already has a 2016-term clerkship or is applying for a 2016 clerkship is required to attend the panel and one of the breakout sessions; 1Ls are also encouraged to attend.

    The following judges will be participating in the Workshop: Judge Leslie Southwick, U.S. District Court for the Fifth Circuit (Jackson, MS); Judge Vince Chhabria, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California (San Francisco, CA); Judge Lance Africk, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana (New Orleans, LA); Judge Elaine Kaplan, U.S. Court of Federal Claims (Washington, DC); and Justice Jeff Brown, Supreme Court of Texas (Austin, TX).

    For a complete agenda, which includes the panel “Creating Your Strongest Clerkship Application,” from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in the Eidman Courtroom followed by breakout sessions with the judges from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., please contact Katie Deetjen at clerk-admin@law.utexas.edu.

    Please join WilmerHale partner Debo Adegbile for a meet and greet luncheon. He will speak briefly on his career experiences throughout the public, private, and government sectors, followed by a casual discussion and opportunity to ask questions. Mr. Adegbile worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and as a senior counsel on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary prior to joining WilmerHale in New York. He was also previously nominated to serve as the U.S. Assistant Attorney General for the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Division.
