Career Counseling

Our career counselors can help you navigate your job search and offer guidance in balancing the demands of finding a job while in law school. Each one of our seven career counselors has a J.D. or LL.M., has practiced law, and specializes in counseling students interested in working in the corporate, government, judicial, law firm, or public interest sector, as well as those interested in pursuing alternative careers.

Students may schedule a one-on-one career counseling session with any of our career counselors, with first-year students (1Ls) being able to schedule an appointment to meet after October 15 of their first semester. As we may experience a higher volume of student requests at times, please allow enough time for counselors to review your resume and cover letters and for yourself to make revisions. To schedule an appointment, stop by the CSO in TNH 3.130, or contact us at 512-232-1150 or cso@law.utexas.edu.

Our career counselors can:

  • Review and critique of your resume and cover letters;
  • Provide information about career options;
  • Advise you on how to tailor your job search to fit your goals;
  • Provide information on mentors and other practitioners who may provide excellent sources of advice;
  • Conduct mock interviews;
  • Provide strategies for maximizing your chances of being selected for interviews;
  • Assist you with compiling employer lists based on practice area, geographic area, and/or size of employer;
  • Provide contact and deadline information for public service fellowships and judicial clerkships;
  • Advise you regarding communications with prospective employers, including negotiation of employment terms;
  • Provide advice on how to overcome road blocks along the way to employment; and
  • Provide supportive and objective feedback.

We encourage you to establish an on-going working relationship with the career counselors for the duration of your job search. Let us know what your career objectives are so that we can best assist you.
