Founding Member Nina Cortell to Receive the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service

Center for Women in Law Founding Member Nina Cortell will be honored by The University of Texas School of Law Alumni Association as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service. “We are pleased and proud to recognize Nina’s many accomplishments and to count her among the most distinguished members of The University of Texas School of Law community,” said Stefanie A. Lindquist, Interim Dean.

Nina is ranked by numerous publications as one of the top appellate lawyers in Texas, and, in 2009, was named Outstanding Lawyer of the Year by the Dallas Bar Association.  During the course of her 36-year career at Haynes and Boone, LLP, she has represented corporations, individuals, and public entities in appeals that have put her at the forefront of Texas appellate practice.  She frequently speaks on appellate topics and has been asked by the federal and state judiciary to assist with issues related to judicial process, including her work on the prestigious Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee.  She is a fellow in the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, a member of the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee, and a member of the American Law Institute.

Nina is committed to mentoring young lawyers, particularly women lawyers.  Nina serves on the Executive Committee of the Center for Women in Law, she is a member of the Dallas Women Lawyers Association Advisory Board, and past chair of the State Bar Task Force on Hiring, Retention and Promotion of Women and Minorities in Law Firms and Corporations.

The alumni awards luncheon honoring Nina is scheduled for Friday, April 20, 2012. The luncheon will be held at noon in the Tejas Dining Room of the AT&T Conference Center.

The Center for Women in Law congratulates Nina on this well-deserved honor.
