Center for Women in Law Student Intern Maggie Cheu published her article Now and Then: How Coverture Ideology Informs the Rhetoric of Abortion in the Texas Journal of Women and the Law. The article posits that the ideology in support of early America’s laws of coverture impacts contemporary society’s assessment of issues relating to gender – in particular abortion. Furthermore, Maggie suggests that arguments founded in the “coverture ethos” must be thoroughly inspected, if not entirely revised.

Maggie Cheu currently serves as Editor in Chief of the Texas Journal of Women and the Law and Staff Editor for the American Journal of Criminal Law. In addition, she is an Event Coordinator for the American Constitutional Society and has served as a member of the Executive Board of the Assault Survivor’s Assistance Program. In 2012, Maggie received the Pro Bono Superstar award from the Pro Bono Program for 900 hours of pro bono service. Maggie graduates the University of Texas School of Law in May of 2013, and upon graduation will take a position at the Queens District Attorney’s Office in New York.

The Center for Women in Law congratulates Maggie on this well-deserved honor.

On Thursday, April 11, 2013, the Center for Women in Law will welcome Professor Mahzarin Banaji, a foremost leader on the science behind unconscious thinking and feeling as they unfold in social context and the Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University.

Professor Banaji will speak at the Four Seasons from 2:35 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. on the research behind her new book, Blindspot: Hidden Biases of Good People. Using the revolutionary test she co-developed (the Implicit Association Test), Professor Banaji will demonstrate how subtle biases influence interactions with other attorneys and judges, efforts to persuade juries, and the perceptions of our clients and witnesses. Professor Banaji’s talk will be followed by a Q&A session.

Professor Banaji was elected fellow of the Society for Experimental Psychologists in 2005, and in 2009 she was named Herbert A. Simon Fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. She is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Psychological Science, of which she was President. In the past Banaji demonstrated her devotion to undergraduate and graduate education by serving as Director of Undergraduate Studies at Yale and as Head Tutor at Harvard, as well as by winning Yale’s Lex Hixon Prize for Teaching Excellence.

Professor Banaji received her bachelor of the arts degree from Nizam College and her master of the arts in Psychology from Osmania University in Hyderabad. In 1986, she received her Ph.D. from Ohio State University, and she later became an NIH postdoctoral fellow at University of Washington.

The theme for the 2013 program year is ‘The Future of Texas is Now: From Local to Global.’

“Linda is one of 92 outstanding women leaders competitively selected from across the state to participate in the longest-running women’s leadership development program in the US. Throughout the year-long program, she will have the opportunity to broaden her perspective on our state by exploring four Texas cities and receiving cutting-edge information from renowned experts, government officials and other leaders to positively inform her work and community for years to come,” said Candace O’Keefe-Mathis, the CEO of Women’s Resources.

“Drawing from her nearly 15 years of working to advance women lawyers and to promote greater workplace flexibility in law firms, Linda designed and implemented a cutting-edge program agenda that has garnered national attention,” commented Dean Ward Farnsworth of the University of Texas School of Law on Linda’s nomination to Leadership Texas.
