About

This year marks the publication of Constitutional Redemption: Political Faith in an Unjust World, by Professor Jack M. Balkin of Yale Law School, and the 25th anniversary republication of Constitutional Faith, by Sanford Levinson.

The University of Texas School of Law is hosting a conference on the two books, which discuss Americans' commitment to the Constitution, and the role that the Constitution plays in American political identity and in American movements for political and social reform.

Do political legitimacy and constitutional fidelity require faith in the Constitution, or is the reverence that most Americans feel for their founding document misplaced? Why have so many political and social movements called for the restoration or redemption of the "true" or the "real" Constitution? Is it possible for the Constitution's great promises to be redeemed, or is it time for a new constitutional convention? These and other questions will be the focus of the two day conference.
