Position Description

The next Dean of The University of Texas School of Law will oversee, promote, and expand UT Law School's mission of excellence in education, scholarship, and service to the community. We seek a leader who is willing to build upon the strengths of the institution and lead this excellent law school into the evolving legal profession of the 21st Century.

The Dean's Activities

The Dean of the University of Texas School of Law is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School and reports to the Provost. The Dean is responsible for internal governance of the law school and well as sustaining the UT Law School's relationships with outside constituencies. As the chief academic officer, the Dean is responsible for the following specific activities:

Strategic Planning

In collaboration with the faculty, the Dean is responsible to the Provost for ongoing strategic planning for the UT Law School. The Dean develops a long-range vision, strategic plan and coordinates an implementation of the plan by providing detailed administrative and fiscal provisions to advance the excellence of the UT Law School mission. The Dean also works with the Deans of the other schools and the Provost at the University of Texas to develop and promote interdisciplinary strategic initiatives.

Governance

The Dean is responsible for implementing a system of governance that insures the active involvement of the faculty and staff in the development of the long-range strategic plans, major budgetary priorities, educational programs, and other important activities and issues that affect the well-being of the school and its place in The University of Texas. This system must promote the efficient allocation of resources to prepare students for outstanding professional practice of the highest ethical values. UT Law School is home to many centers and interdisciplinary efforts and the Dean is responsible for building and improving upon these efforts to foster advanced learning. The system of governance must promote involvement in faculty scholarship and educational programs.

Faculty Appointments

In collaboration with the faculty, the Dean is responsible for recruiting and retaining a diverse, world class faculty. The Dean is responsible to the Provost for the recruitment, appointment, reappointment, and recommendations for promotion and tenure of faculty at the UT Law School. The Dean works through the established appointment, promotion, and tenure process of UT Law School and The University of Texas and is responsible maintaining its integrity.

Budgetary & Administrative Oversight

The Dean is responsible to the Provost for all aspects of the UT Law School's budget consistent with the University of Texas budget system. In addition to budgetary oversight, the Dean is responsible for decisions relating to non-faculty staff and the management of UT Law School facilities to accomplish the goals of the institution within the context of policies and procedures of the University of Texas.

Development

The Dean is responsible for raising new financial resources for UT Law School. This responsibility includes identifying the financial needs of the institution within the long range strategic plan, leading the development efforts of the Law School, and development relationships with alumni and other potential donors. UT Law School is the beneficiary of a separate University of Texas Law School Foundation that currently manages over $125 million of endowment assets. The Dean is responsible for working with the Foundation to advance the goals of UT Law School.
