BECOME A MENTOR

Make a gift of your time. Sign up to become a UT Law Mentor.

The UT Law Mentor Directory is available on Symplicity. Mentor information is updated on a continual basis. Therefore, the CSO encourages users to periodically perform new searches to get the most current mentor information.

The UT Law Mentor Directory is a valuable resource for students seeking information on a wide range of topics, from career paths to job search advice, diverse geographic locations to job market trends. These mentors have volunteered to share their insights and expertise with students seeking to expand their job-related knowledge and enhance their professional experiences.

The Mentor Directory is especially helpful for networking purposes. Students can use it to establish an assortment of contacts and become involved with the professional legal community. Mentors offer the wisdom of their experiences to assist students in their preparations for life after law school.

How to use the UT Law Mentor Directory
Please note that the Mentor Directory is available for attaining informational interviews and career guidance only. Do not contact mentors for employment or business purposes. The CSO reserves the right to deny access privileges to the Mentor Directory for those who do not comply with these guidelines.

  • Call or e-mail the potential mentor with a short introduction and a request for some time, either for an informational interview or for a couple of quick questions.
  • Prepare informed questions for the mentor by researching him or her. Read the CSO handout on conducting "Informational Interviews."
  • Be persistent! Mentors are typically very busy and might not respond the first time you contact them. Don't hesitate to try again.
  • Ask for a business card, and provide the mentor with either your resume or business card.
  • Always follow-up with a thank-you note as mentors are giving you their time and expertise to help you. See "Thank-You Letter Samples."
  • Read the brochure "Working with a Mentor: 50 Practical Strategies for Success", published by the National Association for Law Placement, which is available in the CSO Resource Library.
