Hello and thank you for your interest in the 2008-2009 Mentor Program.
What do the mentors do?
Generally, the mentors serve as an important resource for their students, offering them support and guidance as needed. The mentors help the first-years become acclimated to law school, and are responsible for planning social activities and coordinating participation in intramural sports. The mentors also hold sessions for their students designed to help them get through their first year, such as preparing for class and outlining. Finally, the mentors play an integral role in supporting the Society Program. There are approximately 25 students in a mentor group.
Application Process:
Please submit an application form (Word .doc), your resume, a photo of yourself, and a brief personal statement (no longer than 1 page) telling us why you would like to be a mentor, and why you believe you will be a good mentor. The application, which can be submitted either in person to Nancy Bennett in Room 2.125, or by email to achilds@law.utexas.edu, is due by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, March 19.
After reviewing the applications, Professor Sokolow and Allyson Childs will conduct interviews with prospective mentors from Wednesday, March 26 through Friday, March 28.
Important Dates:
Please note that if you are selected as a mentor, you must be back in Austin for Mentor Training on August 21 and 22. The mentors will host pre-orientation get-togethers during the weekend of August 23 and 24. Orientation will be on August 25 and 26.
Should you have any questions about the mentor program or the application process, please feel free to contact Allyson Childs at achilds@law.utexas.edu or Professor Sokolow at dsokolow@law.utexas.edu.
