- Adaptive technology- A desktop computer located in TNH 4.202 on the fourth
floor of the Law Library is equipped with screen magnification software and
voice recognition software for use by students requiring adaptive technology.
Contact the Student Affairs Office for additional
information.
Additional adaptive technology resources are available for use by law
students across the UT campus.
- Bandwidth
limitations - Bandwidth, that is, the amount of data transmitted over
a given period of time, is a limited resource. As a user of the Public Network,
you have a limited amount of bandwidth that you may consume each Sunday through
Saturday. If you upload or download too much data, your Public Network access
will be restricted. Highly excessive bandwidth usage can disable your account
for up to one week.
- BevoWare
- BevoWare provides the software you need to protect your computer from viruses,
improve the security of your connections, browse the Web, read and send e-mail,
use the printing system, and more. Software is available for
download
at no charge.
- CALI -- the Center for Computer-Assisted Legal Instruction --
is a consortium of law schools that provide computer-mediated legal instruction. The CALI Library of Lessons, containing over 300 tutorials
in 28 subject areas, is available to law students
online or on a CD available at no charge from the Help Desk in the
Computer Learning Center.
- Campus
Computer Store - Discounted hardware, software, and computer peripherals
are available at the Campus Computer Store, located in the Flawn
Academic Center on the West Mall next to the Tower. Campus Computer Store also offers
repair services for computer hardware.
- Computer
Learning Center (computer lab) - Located on the fifth floor of the Law
Library, the Computer Learning Center is reserved for law student use only.
The facility contains 82 desktop computers, printing facilities, a classroom
for hands-on computer instruction, and a Help Desk for computing assistance.
- Computer security - Use of the campus public network involves keeping your personal system free of viruses, spyware, and other malicious software
Tips on maintaining your system are available from the
UT Information Security Office. Dell Computers also maintains a helpful
site on securing your personal computer.
- Special Offers on Laptops - Dell and Apple offer special prices for UT Law students, faculty, and staff.
- Dell laptop repair drop off - Dell laptops covered under the appropriate service contract may be dropped off at the Computer
Learning Center for repair by certified Dell technicians.
- Dial-up access - Telesys
is the University's dial-up service for Internet access. Telesys costs $10.
per month and is payable through the What-I-Owe
page. You must pay for Telesys within 24 hours of activation of the service
or access will be turned off.
- E-mail accounts - University
Mailbox Service (UMBS) is the University's primary e-mail service for
faculty, staff, and students. Each account may store up to 100MB of disk storage.
UMBS may be accessed with mail clients such as Eudora and Pine, as well as
with any Web
browser.
- E-mail stations - three desktop computers on the second
floor of the Law Library are reserved for law student use in checking
e-mail. The stations are located behind the catalog kiosks next to the Law
and Popular Culture Collection.
- File storage - Law students may store up to 150MB of data at no charge on
Webspace,
the University's file storage system. Your documents are secure, backed up
on a regular basis and may be shared with other individuals you authorize.
- Headphones for loan - Six headphone sets are available for loan upon presentation
of a UT ID from the Help Desk in the Computer Learning Center.
- Help
Desk (ITS) - The ITS Help Desk offers assistance with all aspects of campus
computing. The Help Desk is located in the Flawn
Academic Center lobby and is open Monday through Friday
from 8AM until 6PM. You may also contact the Help Desk
online or by phone at 475-9400.
- Laptops
for loan from the Law Library - Ten Dell Latitude D600 laptops are available
for 24-hour loan from the Law Library. All are equipped with wireless and
wired network cards, as well as CD-RW/DVD drives.
- Laptop batteries for loan from Law Library - Five extended-life laptop batteries,
provding up to five hours of continuous power, are available for 24-hour loan
from the Law Library. Adapters for a number of makes
and models are available.
- Microsoft
Outlook accounts - Law students may establish a Microsoft Outlook account
for e-mail and calendaring on a Microsoft Exchange server maintained by the
University. Outlook accounts cost $13. per year and include 150MB of disk storage.
- Printing
- A variety of laser printers are located in the Computer Learning Center
for student use, including a color laser printer and a résumé
printer for which you supply the stationery. A laser printer is located on
the second floor of the Law Library for printing from laptops connected to
the wireless public network. Personally owned computers must have the
appropriate
software installed to print to these laser printers. You must have
an active Bevo
Bucks account with funds deposited to print to any of the above printers.
- Scanning - An HP ScanJet scanner is available for use on station A25 in
room 5.221 in the Computer Learning Center. Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop, and
OmniPage Pro software are installed on the station for conversion of documents
into a variety of file formats.
- Software available at no charge - Law students may pick up a complimentary
copy of Microsoft Office XP or 2003 Professional and a CALI
Student CD-ROM containing the interactive tutorials from the Help Desk
in the Computer Learning Center.
- Storage media - Blank formatted floppy disks and CD-R disks are available
by request at the Help Desk in the Computer Learning Center.
- Texas
Board of Law Examiners forms - Online versions of the Declaration of Intent
to Study Law and the In-State Student Application to take the Texas Bar Examination
are available on all desktop computers in the Computer Learning Center. These
online versions offer the advantage of a completeness check prior to printing
for signature. The forms are located in the Board of Law Examiners folder
in the Start menu.
- Training
and computer classes - A variety of free and fee-based classes are offered
across campus in using computing resources.
- Virus protection - Protecting your computer against viruses, Trojan horses,
worms and other computer security threats is a critical aspect of computer
ownership. The University's license for Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition
with Client Security covers use by students on personally-owned computers.
Symantec AntiVirus is available for download from the BevoWare
site. Norton Antivirus is available for Macintosh systems. Be sure to enable File System Realtime Protection after installation to keep your protection
up to date.
- Web publishing - Law students have several avenues available for Web publishing.
Webspace,
the University's file storage system, may be used for Web publishing. There
are no associated charges for the first 150MB of data. Individual accounts
may be authorized for access to the University's Unix
or Windows
NT/2000 timeshare systems. Charges vary according to the amount of stored
data.
- Web
publishing policies - All pages published on University managed servers
must comply with the University's publishing policies.
- Wired public
network access - Available on the fifth floor of the Law Library, the
Tom Clark Lounge, and the lounge area near the Student Bar Association office.
All conference rooms in the Law Library are also equipped with wired network
ports. Any student with a laptop, a UT
EID, an Ethernet network card and cable can use these connections to access
the Internet.
- Wireless network cards for loan from the Law Library - A total of five
Cisco Aironet wireless network cards are available for 24-hour loan from the
Law Library for installation in personally owned laptops.
- Wireless
public network access - Available in all public areas of the Law
School, as well as the breezeway patio. Any student with a laptop, a UT
EID, and an 802.11b
or 802.11g-compliant
wireless network card can connect to the wireless network.
