    CLE\'s 16th Annual Admiralty and Maritime Law Conference

    On September 28, delivered a paper titled Inland Damage to Ocean Cargo: When Do the Maritime Rules Apply? to CLE's 16th Annual Admiralty and Maritime Law Conference in Houston. In addition, Sturley and David Robertson delivered their paper, Recent Developments in Admiralty and Maritime Law at the National Level and in the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits.

    UNCITRAL Working Group III Delegation Meeting

    On September 11, attended a meeting in Washington DC of the United States delegation to UNCITRAL Working Group III (Transport Law), which is negotiating the new multilateral treaty designed to unify the core elements of international maritime transport law. Sturley is the senior advisor on the U.S. delegation.

    August 20, 2007 – August 23, 2007

    UNCITRAL Secretariat

    August 20-23, participated in an Experts' Group Meeting convened by the UNCITRAL Secretariat. He was one of nine experts from around the world invited to help finalize the draft of a new multilateral treaty designed to unify the core elements of international maritime transport law. The Experts' Group Meeting was held at UNCITRAL's Vienna headquarters.

    UNCITRAL "Modern Law for Global Commerce" Congress

    On July 11th, delivered a paper titled Sea Carriage Goes Ashore: The Relationship Between Multimodal Conventions and Domestic Unimodal Rules as part of the panel on "Carriage of Goods in the 21st Century" at the "Modern Law for Global Commerce" Congress. The Congress, sponsored by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) to celebrate its fortieth annual session, was held in Vienna, Austria, July 9-12, at the Vienna International Centre.

    On June 29, delivered a paper titled Liability of the Carrier at a conference sponsored by the University of Bologna (Italy) on "The UNCITRAL Draft Convention on the Carriage of Goods by Sea," held in Ravenna, Italy.

    September 20, 2007 – May 4, 2007

    Maritime Law Association of the United States

    May 1 - 4: attended the spring meeting of the Maritime Law Association of the United States in New York, NY. Sturley spoke to the Carriage of Goods Committee on May 2 on "Choice of Law in Multimodal Carriage after Sompo Japan v. Union Pacific." He spoke to the Uniformity Committee on May 2 on "Altadis v. Sea Star: A Lost Opportunity." On May 3, he delivered a report to the meeting of the International Organizations, Conventions, and Standards Committee on the work of the 19th session of Working Group III (Transport Law) of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). On May 4, he delivered a paper at the MLA's annual CLE program titled "When Ocean Cargo is Damaged in a Train Wreck."

  • Eighth Nicholas J. Healy Lecture

    May 3, 2007

    NYU Law School

    On May 3rd, delivered the Eighth Nicholas J. Healy Lecture at NYU Law School as a part of a panel of four law professors speaking on "Admiralty's Greatest Hits." Each panelist spoke on a particularly influential judicial decision. Sturley spoke on Panama Railroad Co. v. Johnson (1924). David Robertson served as the moderator. The biennial Healy Lecture was endowed in honor of Nicholas J. Healy, a prominent leader of the New York maritime bar and a long-time adjunct professor at NYU Law School. The papers will be published in the Journal of Maritime Law & Commerce.

    UNCITRAL's Working Group III

    April 16-26: attended the 19th session of UNCITRAL's Working Group III (Transport Law), held at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Sturley is the senior advisor on the U.S. delegation to this Working Group, which is negotiating a new multilateral treaty to unify the core elements of international maritime transport law. He is also the Working Group's coordinator for the chapter on Transport Documents and Electronic Transport Records, which was approved during this session.

    April 6, 2007

    National Press Club

    On April 6th, attended a symposium at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lewis F. Powell, Jr. The symposium was sponsored by Washington & Lee Law School, where Justice Powell earned his first law degree, and focused on affirmative action in higher eduction. Sturley clerked for Justice Powell during the Supreme Court's 1982 Term.

    CLE\'s 16th Annual Admiralty and Maritime Law Conference

    On March 29th, chaired the planning meeting in Houston for CLE's 16th Annual Admiralty and Maritime Law Conference, which will be held in Houston on September 28.

    March 8, 2007 – March 10, 2007

    14th Annual Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition

    On March 8th through the 10th, attended the 14th Annual Judge John R. Brown Admiralty Moot Court Competition in San Francisco, CA. The Law School runs the Competition each year with a local host school (this year, the University of San Francisco Law School). Sturley co-authored the problem and the bench brief with David Robertson and he supervised the administration of the Competition. Next year's Competition will be held in New Orleans, March 6-8, 2008.
