A. Mechele Dickerson joined the University of Texas School of Law Faculty in January 2006 and became the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in September 2006.
Professor Dickerson is a nationally recognized bankruptcy scholar. Her current research focuses on the US housing crisis and the problem of global over-indebtedness. Other research interests include control and ethical issues in business insolvencies. Professor Dickerson is dedicated to the law classroom learning experience, and was honored to be the 2007 recipient of the Texas Exes Faculty Teaching Award for excellence in teaching.
After graduating from law school, she clerked for Judge Nathaniel R. Jones of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She then practiced law in Washington, D.C. and Norfolk, Virginia. In 1995, she joined the faculty at William and Mary School of Law and during her tenure there received two teaching awards (in 1998 and in 2005). Professor Dickerson regularly conducts bankruptcy workshops for the Federal Judicial Center. She also is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute.
