Mr. Schiess directs the legal-writing program and teaches legal writing, legal drafting, and plain English. He is a frequent seminar speaker, and he has published more than a dozen articles on practical legal-writing skills, plus four books. In 2007, his legal-writing blog at Legalwriting.net was named one of the ABA Journal Blawg 100: "The best Websites by lawyers for lawyers." He graduated from Cornell Law School, practiced law for three years at the Texas firm of Baker Botts, and in 1992 joined the faculty at Texas.
