Law review: does it improve writing? Part 1
Excerpt from a student-written seminar paper:
Contrary to first-year law students' beliefs and student law-journal editors' contentions, student law journals, specifically those at the University of Texas School of Law, are not, in their present condition, effective tools for improving staff members' legal writing. Journal staff members confirm that membership, at best, provides ample opportunity to practice citation and pointed research. The legal writing of student law-journal editors has a greater chance of improvement, but even this is limited.

The excerpt seems to ignore what is surely offers the biggest boost to Law Review members' writing skills: the Note-writing process. How many other times in Law School or in practice will one have the benefit of close edits & frequent feedback from a dedicated editor? Serving as a Note Editor also substantially improves one's writing skills. Whatever one's opinion of Professors' Articles, most student drafts need significant editing. Note Editors thus benefit from seeing a great deal of writing that needs much improvement; they can learn from seeing what doesn't work. And in trying to fix what doesn't work, they often learn about what does work.
While I obviously have not read this full paper, I hope the author discusses the Note process at some point.
I would say that it improved my writing by teaching me how to edit. But it also exposed me to an awful lot of bad writing, which I think infected my own to some degree.
One problem that the journals (other than Texas Law Review) always had was getting staff members to complete their notes. At my journal, we accepted first-year members around the winter break. The reason for that was that we wanted our Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor to have a full year of experience as editors before running the show. We would select editors from our members who had just completed their first or second year. We would select our EIC and ME only from returning editors. This meant that we had to relax the requirement of completing your note before you can become an editor, so that we could keep the stars on the EIC/ME track. Having an EIC who never wrote a note was a recurring problem, but one that we believe was balanced by greater editorial and management experience.
