Book Review:
Roger K. Newman, Reviewing Daniel J. Meador’s Mr. Justice
Black and His Books, 53 TEXAS L. REV. 406 (1975).
Abstract:
According to the author, Meador’s Mr. Justice Black and His
Books is one of two indispensable books on the late Supreme
Court Justice. This book includes a thirty-three page essay by
Mr. Meader, a former clerk for Justice Black, and a catalogue of
the books in Justice’s Black’s library at the time of his death.
Among the books essential to Black’s library were Edith
Hamilton’s The Greek Way (along with any number of other books
on ancient Greece and Rome), Joseph Frank’s The Leveller’s, and
any book on the topic of Thomas Jefferson (whom, according to
Meader, Black quoted more than any other individual). The
reviewer concludes that this intellectual biography will be
cherished by Blackphiles, Supreme Court buffs, and book lovers
alike.
